2026 Auto Repair Shop Survey: An Overview of Survey Data on the "Lifetime" Myth of Automatic Transmission Oil

In our latest automotive aftermarket survey, we analyze the latest trends in auto repair shops. The key finding: Nearly half of the independent repair shops surveyed in Germany report that vehicle owners refuse relevant services because they believe their automatic transmission fluid will last the entire life of the vehicle. This misconception costs auto repair shops and drivers real money.

  • About 45% of repair shops report that customers

    regularly using this argument.

  • 72% of repair shops perform no more than five transmission fluid changes per month, even though significantly more vehicles with automatic transmissions come into the shop.

  • Nearly 60% see potential for three to ten additional changes per month.

Industry Dialogue at Automechanika 2026

At Automechanika 2026, industry experts discussed why the potential for automatic transmission fluid changes in German repair shops remains largely untapped, despite the rising proportion of automatic transmissions. And this is despite the fact that the vehicles have long been on the lift.

The diagnosis was clear: there is a lack of education, processes, and proactive communication needed to boost business.

  • Andreas Raulf (GRIP das Motormagazin): “As long as customers believe that an automatic transmission doesn’t need maintenance, we’ll continue to see preventable damage. Education must come first. Business will then follow naturally.”

  • The Car Doctors (Holger Parsch & Hans-Jürgen Faul): “Changing automatic transmission fluid must be addressed in every repair shop just as routinely as changing engine oil.”

  • Patrick Stüdemann (MEYLE AG): “Anyone who builds expertise in oil management today is positioning their shop for the future, because this topic remains relevant even for electric vehicles and modern drive units.”

  • Jeffrey Kilian (BIV-Kfz): “This topic must be approached strategically to create real added value for the business. The numbers are clear: a significant portion of the potential remains untapped.”
